James Preston: From an article in the Appleby Newsletter, April 1983, published by Appleby Heritage Association the following item for James Preston Appleby: "It is said he came to Colleton County, South Carolina about 1785, an affluent young man with a fine horse, a pack mule and a slave. His name was James Preston Appleby, his parentage, birthplace and birth date still unknown. He was married, 23 November 1790, to Mary Rumph of Orangeburg, South Carolina. Mary was born in 1773 and died 1852. James Preston Appleby, died 1849, both are buried Hagerman's Cemetery, near St. George Parish (now Dorchester County). South Carolina.
Peter Ridley: "Peter Ridley Appleby with his wife, Martha Sarah Minus, and four children migrated to Macon County, Alabama in 1835. Martha died 24 July 1881, buried at Little Texas Campground Cemetery. Peter Ridley Appleby died in 1857. His burial place is not known. Presumably, the same as his wife." Morgan Thomas: David Appleby, Ozark, Missouri (1998) sent a copy from the South Carolina Department of Archives and History of the Civil War record for M. T. Morgan Appleby: Morgan Thomas Appleby was a Captain/Major. Probably enlisted as Captain and resigned a Major. His Unit was Company C & Staff, 24 South Carolina Infantry. He enlisted at Georges Station, South Carolina, 7 January 1862, at age 48. On last Roll May/June 1863. Remarks: Resigned June 11, 1863 due to election as state senator for the Parish of St. George Dorchester. Also, David sent records for Morgan Appleby's two sons who enlisted at the same place and time. 18 year old D. C. Appleby and 17 year old Peter R. Appleby. Correction of (above) record of Morgan Thomas) provided by Gail Appleby Cannon, 9 April 2004: Information from Gail Appleby Cannon, gailcannon@atlantic.net (4/9/2004), as follows: "I
have the estate papers of Morgan Thomas Appleby. Indeed he did
enlist as a Capt. and made Major before he resigned to serve as
State Senator for the parish of St. George's Dorchester and he did have
two sons, but their names were A. C. Appleby and Felix Vivian Appleby. He
also had a daughter, Ada. A.C. stands for Adrian Connor. Felix later
became Mayor of St. George.
